About Us

MAO Candles, owned by Alexis Midkiff and Sara Perry, began with a simple love for candles, and the spark of a dream. What started as a creative outlet soon evolved into a small business rooted in meaning, memory, and mindfulness. We wanted to create more than just something that smells good, we wanted to craft something that feels good. A candle that brings comfort, slows time, and adds warmth to everyday life.

The name “MAO” holds deep significance: it stands for Margaret Ann O’Nolan, a beloved mother, wife, grandmother, and sister whose legacy lives on in everything we do. She radiated light, love, and quiet strength, and her spirit continues to inspire us daily. MAO Candles was created in her honor, to keep her light glowing and to share that glow with others. Every candle is a tribute to her and a reminder to pause and savor the little things.

What makes our candles special? We use a coconut apricot wax blend that burns cleaner and longer than standard soy wax. It’s free of toxins, phthalates, and parabens. We pour every candle by hand and craft each vessel ourselves from concrete, sealing and glazing them for a smooth, artful finish. No two are the same, and that’s exactly how we like it.

Best of all, our candles are designed to last. Once you’ve burned through your favorite scent, you can bring your vessel back for a refill! Fan favorite scents include Amazing Grace, Java, Driftwood, and Milk + Mango, but we’re always experimenting and evolving.

You can find our candles at several beloved local spots, including Coastal Roots Boutique, Safe Haven Salon, The Honeycomb Shops, Steel Magnolias Salon, Hallmark in Ocean Springs, and The Beauty Bar.

We’ve got exciting things ahead, from pop-up markets to new product launches like non-toxic cleaners, signature perfumes, and even puppy “paw-fumes” (yes, really!)
